WHAT IS STROKE

The Volunteer Stroke Scheme was set up in 1983 to cater for stroke patients and their families.

Priority was given to those with speech and allied problems. Over the years the scheme has progerssed and we now have four Dublin based clubs where groups meet on a weekly basis and participate in therapeutic type activities, as well as physiotherapy sessions.

Annual Holidays, Outings and Christmas Parties are also held.

Home visits by volunteers are arranged wherby a speech programme given by the patient's Speech and Language Therapist is followed.

We produce an annual news letter which is distributed to all Hospitals, Libraries, Members and the G.P's in the Dublin area.

Support Meetings for carers and their families are also given, along with Volunteer Training sessions.

There is a Technical Aids Loan Scheme in operation whereby Technical Aids can be borrowed F.O.C. for a three month period. This is to cover waiting time, which is sometimes experienced while patients are waiting for equipment from their Health Board or whereby they would like to try out an item before purchasing. These have to be applied for by an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.
